FW-190 A7 W.Nr. 431007, flown by Heinz Bar, CO of II./JG 1, Stormede Air Base, Germany, April 1944
HA7417
General Background
In 1937 the Me-109 was an excellent aircraft but the Reich Air Ministry wanted a new advanced fighter that could out perform any future foreign designs. Kurt Tank’s Focke-Wulf Fw-190 Würger (Butcher Bird) won the design competition by using an air-cooled radial engine. When the Fw-190 entered combat in the summer of 1941 it already was Germany’s premiere piston-powered WWII fighter. Over 20,000 of all variants of the Fw-190 were built with 13,291 of these being of the 9 different “A” variants.
The Aircraft
Heinz Bar joined the Luftwaffe in 1935 and scored his first victory in 1939. Since his aircraft at the time was White 13 he considered 13 to be his lucky number and all his regular future aircraft wore 13. During WWII Bar flew over 1,000 missions and accumulated 220 confirmed victories with 16 of these while flying an Me-262 jet. On April 24, 1944 Bar scored his 200th victory when he shot down a B-24 while flying his reserve Fw-190A Red 23. Bar survived being shot down 18 times.
