P-51D Mustang "Bunnie"flown by Capt. Roscoe C. Brown, Jr. 100th FS, 332nd FG Ramitelli, Italy March 1945
HA7717
General Background
Later in WWII the Allied bombers were flying deep into Germany but suffered tremendous losses because of the lack of range the fighter escorts had. German fighters would wait beyond the range of the Allied fighters and then attack the vulnerable bombers. Once the P-51 called Mustang by the British had the Allison engine replaced with a British Merlin it possessed the high performance that had been lacking. With drop tanks the P-51 had the range to escort bombers all the way to Berlin and back.
The Aircraft
Roscoe Brown received his pilot wings at Tuskgee Army Air Base in Alabama and arrived in Italy in July 1944 assigned to the 100th FS of the 332nd FG. On March 24, 1945 Lt. Brown was Squadron Leader for a bomber escort when he downed an Me-262 jet. In April 1945 he was promoted to Captain and made Commander of the 100th FS. Captain Brown is credited with 2 aerial victories, 3 aircraft on the ground and 13 locomotives and received the DFC and other metals and citations.
