A-10A Thunderbolt II 706th TFS, 926th TFG, Saudi Arabia, Operation Desert Storm 1991 "Chopper Popper"
General Background
A-10 was the first USAF aircraft designed specifically for “Close Air Support ” (CAS) . It can be described as the outcome of the experience gained in the Vietnam War and the threats of the Soviet Union armor forces during the Cold War era. The first A-10A “Thunderbolt II” was delivered October 1975 and deployment in March 1976.
A-10's pilot is protected by titanium armor around his seat and the canopy isa large bubble canopy which provides all-round vision. The aircraft is designed with dual engines and the self-sealing fuel cells are protected by internal and external foam . Extra titanium is used to protect some flight control system parts of the aircraft. All these insure the plane and pilot's safety from enemy fires.

The Aircraft
The 23rd TFW was normally based out of England AFB, La. But in 1991 during
Operation Desert Storm they were assigned to the 706th TFS, 926th TFG in Saudi
Arabia. On February 6, 1991 Captain Robert Swain spotted 2 Iraqi helicopters speeding
across the desert. The helicopters split in opposite directions so Captain Swain pursued
the south-bound. Swain first attempted to use an AIM-9L missiles but couldn’t lock on so
the second pass he fired about 300 rounds of his 30mm gun causing the helicopter to
explode. This was the first ever air-to-air kill by an A-10 so the aircraft was named the
“Chopper Popper”.
