P-400 AirCobra 347th FG, 67th FS, 13th US Army Air Force, Guadalcanal 1942
General Background
The P-400 was the modified export version of the P-39 originally planned to provide for the RAF. A total of 179 of such aircraft was delivered to the USAAF.
The Aircraft
For the 67th FS, it was formed in 1941 and were sent to Australia and then Guadalcanal. During a Japanese counter attack in an attempt to retake Guadalcanal 3 P-400s from the 67th FS were called upon to assist the Marines. Just when things looked like the enemy would overwhelm the Marines the P-400s arrived and made several single file passes strafing the Japanese attackers. When the battle was over the P-400s had helped stop the attack and repel the invaders.
