BF 110G-4 "3C+MK" flown by Oblt. Martin Becker, 2./NJG 4, 1944
General Background
The Bf-110G-4 was a dedicated night fighter entering service in late 1942. The airframe was strengthened to accommodate a larger engine than previous models and this also allowed for heavier payloads. It also had extra protection and carried factory installed airborne interception radar. There were field kits available so each pilot could personalize his aircraft with various armaments to help him achieve a higher rate of success. By mid 1944 the Me-410 was replacing the Bf-110G and in February 1945 production ended.
The Aircraft
Martin “Tino” Becker flew 3c+MK the Bf-110G-4 equipped with SN-2b radar and wearing an unusual paint scheme. It appears the Balkenkreuz had been over sprayed and then faintly reapplied on a patch of dark grey. Today this application probably would be called “low-vis”. During Becker’s 83 night-missions he managed to accumulate 53 heavy-bomber victories including 9 in just one night while flying a Ju-88. On 17 March, 1945 Becker claimed his last victory and after WWII lived until 2006 when he died at the age of 89.
