McDonnell Douglas F-4E "Desert Storm" 73-1199, 13th AF, Incirlik AB, Turkey, 1991
General Background
The F-4E variant was an improved version of the C/D with an elongated nose and compact
radar. These two things made it possible to install a 20mm M61A1 6 barrel 640 round Vulcan
gun pod in the nose. The F-4E was the most produced variant with 1387 aircraft being made
over its 12 year production period. The “E” also equipped more air forces than any other variant
of the Phantom II.
The Aircraft
Six F-4Es from the 3rd TFS/ 3rd TFW “Peugeots” based at Clark AFB, Philippines staged at
Hickman AFB on their way to Incirlik AB, Turkey but two had to stay at Spangdahlem due to
mechanical problems. On February 22, 1991 the unit carried out it first mission led by F-4E
73-1199 marked as the 13th AF flagship. The mission involved AAA suppression for F-16s flying
against Al Mosul. With their mission complete the F-Es departed Incirlik on March 19, 1991 and
went directly to AMARC. In 2017 73-1199 was sent to be scrapped.
