F-4C Phantom II 555th TFS, 8th TFW, Ubon, 1967 "SCAT XXVII"
General Background
The F-4 Phantom II first entered US Military service in 1960. It was designed as a fleet defense fighter for the US Navy but by 1963 it was adopted as the US Air Force primary fighter-bomber.
Despite the size and weight of this Cold War icon the F-4 broke 15 world records and continued to hold five of them until 1975.
Produced from 1960 to 1981 there were 5,195 Phantom IIs manufactured. Eleven countries other than the USA had the Phantom II in their inventory.

The Aircraft
The aircraft was used by Col Robin Olds -- flew 152 missions of which
117 were over North Vietnam. Flying his F-4C Phantom "SCAT XXVII" he
got four kills in the Vietnam conflict, including a MiG-21 downed on
02 January 1967. General Olds, leading the most famous fighter sweep
of the war (Operating Bolo), shot down one of seven MiG-21s claimed
that day against no American losses. After final service with the
Texas ANG's 182nd TFS/149th TFG(SA), commencing in 1983, the aircraft
was restored to a semblance of its 'Wolfpack' markings and put on
display within the USAF Museum in 1987.
