McDonnell Douglas F-4J NL212, VF-194, 1977 "Ferris Camouflage"
HA1932
General Background
The F-4 Phantom II first entered US Military service in 1960. It was designed as a fleet defense fighter for the US Navy but by 1963 it was adopted as the US Air Force primary fighter-bomber. Despite the size and weight of this Cold War icon the F-4 broke 15 world records and continued to hold five of them until 1975.

Produced from 1960 to 1981 there were 5,195 Phantom IIs manufactured. Eleven countries other than the USA had the Phantom II in their inventory.
The Aircraft
On August 1, 1963 VF-91 was re-designated and for the third VF-194 "Red Lightning" was used. Between 1964 and 1973 VF-194 made eight deployments to Vietnam. In 1976 VF-194 was re-equipped with the F-4J Phantom II and assigned to the USS Coral Sea. Three VF-194 F-4Js received the "Ferris Camouflage" scheme named after artist Keith Ferris. Designed to break up the aircraft's line and confuse the enemy it was never officially adopted. One of the 3 aircraft that received this scheme was Bu. No. 153798 NL/212 c/n 2005.
