General Background
The F-4 Phantom II first entered US Military service in 1960. It was designed as a fleet defense fighter for the US Navy but by 1963 it was adopted as the US Air Force primary fighter-bomber. Despite the size and weight of this Cold War icon the F-4 broke 15 world records and continued to hold five of them until 1975.

Produced from 1960 to 1981 there were 5,195 Phantom IIs manufactured. Eleven countries other than the USA had the Phantom II in their inventory.
The Aircraft
McDonnell F-4E 77-0308 was built in 1977 for the Turkish Air Force as c/n 5030. In the late 1990s Turkey decided to upgrade the F-4E until they could be replaced by the F-35 Lightning II by 2020 or later. Extensive modifications were carried out on these aircraft with the major upgrades being internal. The new upgraded aircraft were named F-4E / 2020 "Terminators" and first entered service on January 27, 2000 with the 111 "Panthers" and 171 Filo. 111 Filo is located at Eskişehir in northwest Turkey.
