General Background

The North American F-100 Supersabre served the USAF from 1954 to 1971 and the ANG until 1979. The F-100 commonly referred to as the “Hun”, a shortened version of “one hundred” was the first US fighter capable of attaining supersonic speed in level flight. The Hun was used extensively as close-air-support in South Vietnam.

The Aircraft

Originally designated the 510th Fighter-Bomber Squadron the unit was re-designated the 510th Tactical Fighter Squadron (Buzzards) on March 11 1959 and activated on April 9, 1959. They were equipped with the North American F-100D Supersabre. For the brief period from May 11 - June 8 1962 on the units first tour in SEA they were stationed at Takhli RTAFB, Thailand. The symbol on their aircraft tail is a white Speed Bird and while in Thailand they adopted the Thai Cobra symbol.
