General Background
The North American F-100 Supersabre served the USAF from 1954 to 1971 and the ANG until 1979. The F-100 commonly referred to as the “Hun”, a shortened version of “one hundred” was the first US fighter capable of attaining supersonic speed in level flight. The Hun was used extensively as close-air-support in South Vietnam.
The Aircraft
The first USAF Worldwide Gunnery Competition "Gunsmoke" was initiated in 1949 and held biennially at Yuma and before moving to Nellis AFB, Las Vegas, Nevada. The meet wasn't held from 1963-1980 and the last ever meet took place in 1995. In 1958 F-100C 54-1800 from the 333rd Fighter Day Squadron "Lancers" was sent to represent the 4th FDW. This F-100C was later sold to the Turkish Air Force arriving there on October 24, 1974. The last Turkish F-100D was retired in 1982.
