F-100D Super Sabre 0-52816, 120th TFS, Colorado ANG
General Background
The North American F-100 Supersabre served the USAF from 1954 to 1971 and the ANG until 1979. The F-100 commonly referred to as the “Hun”, a shortened version of “one hundred” was the first US fighter capable of attaining supersonic speed in level flight. The Hun was used extensively as close-air-support in South Vietnam.
The Aircraft
In June 21, 1945 the 120th TRS was reconstituted and 11 months later re-designated
120th FS and assigned to the Colorado ANG. The 120th FS "Colorado Cougars" was
stationed at Buckley Field, a section of Lowry AFB, Colorado and was awarded the
history and honors as well as the Guidon (colors) of the former 120th TRS. In January
1961 the unit was once again re-designated, this time 120th TFS and in May 1968 went
to Phan Rang AB, South Vietnam with their F-100Cs. When the 120th returned from
Vietnam in April 1969 they re-equipped with the F-100D variant which they flew until
April 1974 when the converted to the LTV A-7D.
