SB2C-1 Helldiver VB-17, USS Bunker Hill, Rabaul, 11 Nov. 1943
HA2201
General Background
The SB2C was designed to replace the SBD Dauntless. When the Helldivers were first delivered they were so poorly manufactured that some broke in half on landing and wings fell apart in a dive. Some countries cancelled orders and the USAAF never used the 900 they received. Eventually after over 800 modifications and technical changes the Helldiver went on to become one of the most effective dive-bombers of WWII. Most people referred to the plane as “The Big Tail Beast” or just “The Beast”.
The Aircraft
On November 11, 1943 as part of a Task Force the USS Bunker Hill was sent to attack the main Japanese base at Rabaul. When the 23 SB2C-1s led by CO. LCDR James “Moe” Vose at Rabaul they were met by Zeroes. The escorting Hellcats began to engage the Zeroes while the Helldivers attacked ships and managed to damage a cruiser and 3 destroyers plus sinking one. VB-17 lost 4 Helldivers that day, one on take off, one was jettisoned after landing due to battle damage and 2 over Rabaul.
