Helldiver Mk.I JW-104, No.1820 Naval Air Squadron, Fleet Air Arm, 1944
General Background
The SB2C was designed to replace the SBD Dauntless. When the Helldivers were first delivered they were so poorly manufactured that some broke in half on landing and wings fell apart in a dive. Some countries cancelled orders and the USAAF never used the 900 they received. Eventually after over 800 modifications and technical changes the Helldiver went on to become one of the most effective dive-bombers of WWII. Most people referred to the plane as “The Big Tail Beast” or just “The Beast”.
The Aircraft
The squadron formed at Brunswick as a dive-bomber squadron with 9 Helldiver Is in April 1944, moving in May to Squantum till July when moving on transit to Norfolk, USA. In July 1944 the squadron embarked on HMS Arbiter for Speke in the UK, transferring to Burscough and was subsequently briefly posted to Machrihanish where DLT was carried out from HMS Speaker in October 1944.
This period indicated that the Helldiver was inadequate for its intended duties, the squadron being disbanded in December 1944.
