General Background
The Republic F-105 Thunderchief first entered service in 1958. It had been designed for high-speed low-level penetration to deliver a nuclear bomb but was converted to deliver conventional payloads. It was the heaviest U.S. single-engined fighter ever made and could carry a greater bomb load than the B-17, B-24 or B-29. Best known for its action in Vietnam the F-105 flew over 20,000 combat missions with the loss of 382 aircraft out of the 833 produced.
The Aircraft
Colonel Paul Douglas Jr. was a WWII ace with 8 aerial victories and 27 aircraft destroyed on the ground. In 1968-1969 Col. Douglas was Commander of the 388th TFW at Korat, Thailand assigned the tail code JJ. In February 1970 he retired a Brigadier General having over 60 decorations. F-105D-5-RE was s/n 59-1743 and delivered to the USAF in November 1960. During the aircraft's time in Vietnam it wore many names, "Darn Dago", "Lead Zeppelin", Hanoi Express" and "Arkansas Traveler" when it was Col. Douglas's aircraft.
