F-102A Delta Dagger 57th FIS, Keflavik, Iceland 1963
HA3109
General Background
The Convair F-102 Delta Dagger was designed to be an interceptor aircraft and act as the core of USAF air defenses in the late 1950s. The F-102 first appeared in service in 1956 with the task to intercept Soviet bombers. The official name for the F-102 was “Delta Dagger” but the most common term used was “Deuce”. There was 889 F-102As manufactured when production ended in September 1958.
The Aircraft
The 57th Pursuit Squadron was reactivated at Presque Isle, Aroostook County, Maine in March 1953 as the 57th FIS the "Black Knights of Aroostook". In November 1954 the 57th moved to Keflavik, Iceland where they became the "Black Knights of Keflavik" to avoid confusion with the 526th FIS "Black Knights" based in Germany. In late 1962 the 57th FIS received the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger and flew these mostly on intercept missions against unannounced Russian aircraft. In 1973 the 57th FIS re-equipped with F-4Cs.
