General Background
Based on the A-6 Intruder the Northrop Grumman (formerly Grumman) EA-6B Prowler primary
mission is to support strike aircraft and ground forces by interrupting enemy electronics and
gathering tactical intelligence. The aircraft carries 4-crew and is in service with the USN and
USMC. The first USN EA-6B was retired on June 10, 2011 and the last carrier deployment by an
EA-6B took place on November 14, 2014. The USN will replace the EA-6B with the Boeing
EA-18G Growler. The USMC will continue using the EA-6B until 2019.
The Aircraft
VAQ-133 (Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron) “Wizards” was first established in 1969
equipped with the Douglas EKA-3B Skywarrior. Originally stationed in California the “Wizards”
moved to NAS Whidbey Island, Washington in 1971 and reequipped with the EA-6B Prowler. In
1992 VAQ-133 was disestablished only to be reestablished in 1996 and re-designated VAQ-133
(Electronic Attack Squadron) in 1998. From July 2007 until January 2008 VAQ-133 EA-6B
Prowler 161120 / NL-530 (c/n P-84) was based at Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan to support
Operation Enduring Freedom. 161120 later transferred to VAQ-131 Lancers as NE-501.
