General Background
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a twin-engine, variable sweep wings capable of supersonic flight.
The aircraft is crewed by a Pilot and a Radar Intercept Officer who share the tasks of navigation,
target acquisition, ECM and weapons usage. The Tomcat was operated by the United States
Navy and the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force only. The name "Tomcat" is said to come from the
call-sign used by Vice Admiral Thomas Connolly which conformed to the USN tradition of giving
Grumman aircraft feline names.
The Aircraft
The end of WWII saw the disestablishment of VF-2 and it wasn’t until 1972 when the squadron
was re-established and began flying the F-14 in July 1973 reaching a full complement of 12
aircraft in 1974. In April 1975 VF-2 flew over Saigon during the U.S. evacuation of its personnel.
VF-2 aircraft wear a red, white and blue band around the fuselage called the “Langley Stripe”
referring to the stripes used on aircraft aboard the first USN aircraft carrier USS Langley (CV-1).
F-14A 159625 went to AMARCS in 1991.
