MIG-17F (Shenyang J-5) 2011, 923 IAP "Yen The", North Vietnamese Air Force, 12 May 1967
General Background
The Soviet built Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-17 (Fresco) was initially called the MiG-15bis+45° and
completed its maiden flight on January 13, 1950 and entered service in 1952. There were five
variants of the MiG-17 with the MiG-17F (Fresco C) becoming the main variant. The new Klimov
VK-1F engine was the first Soviet built engine with an afterburner and variable nozzle. The
installation of this new engine gave the MiG-17F double the rate of climb of previous variants and
greatly improved vertical maneuvers. This aircraft lacked radar and was purely a day-time fighter.
The Aircraft
On May 12, 1967 Colonel N.C. Gaddis and 1Lt. J.M. Jefferson while flying F-4C 63-7614 of the
390th TFS/366th TFW were part of a patrol providing coverage for a strike on Ha Dong, North
Vietnam. Heavy ground fire damaged 63-7614 and once the ground fire ended VPAF aircraft
were launched. One of the aircraft was Shenyang J-5 (MiG-17F) 2011 wearing the “Snake
Camo” and piloted by Ngo Duc Mai who then shot down the F-4C. Shenyang J-5 “2011” is on
display at the VPAF Museum in Hanoi wearing 9 kill markings.
