General Background
The Lockheed F-35 is an advanced stealth fifth generation fighter combining speed and superb agility. There are three variants; F-35A, B and C. The F-35A CTOL (Conventional Take Off and Landing) and has four internal weapons stations in two weapons bays plus three optional external weapons stations. The F-35B STOVL (Short Take Off Vertical Landing) variant while the F-35C is a CV (Carrier Variant). The F-35 will replace the USAF A-10 and F-16, the F/A-18 for the USN and the F/A-18 and AV-8B Harrier for the USMC.
The Aircraft
On February 14, 2013 the first Lockheed Martin F-35C production model 168733 c/n CF-06
completed its maiden flight. On April 24, 2013 it was assigned to VFA-101 “Grim Reapers” based
at Eglin AFB Florida. The “Grim Reapers” were formed in 1952 disestablished in 2005 and
reestablished in 2012 as a USN F-35C Fleet Replacement Squadron and training facility for Joint
Strike Fighter pilots and maintainers. All these units are subordinate to 33rd FW. In 2016 168733
transferred to VX-9 “Vampires” at China Lake California Naval Air Weapons Station.
