General Background
The Sukhoi Su-34 “Fullback” is an all-weather supersonic medium-range fighter-bomber/strike
aircraft developed for the Russian Air Force and Navy with the intent to replace the Su-24M
“Fencer” and Tu-22MS long-range bomber. The Fullback is based on the Su-27 “Flanker” and is
deployment against ground and/or naval targets. As of April 2018 there have been 122 aircraft
manufactured including 7 prototypes. The export designation of the Su-34 is Su-32.
The Aircraft
Lieutenant-Colonel Oleg Peshkov was a Russian pilot that was killed on November 24, 2015
while flying his Su-24 bomber from a Syrian airbase. The aircraft was shot down by a Turkish AF
F-16 when Turkey claimed the Su-24 violated their airspace. The Navigator Konstantin Murakhtin
survived and was rescued. Peshkov was posthumously awarded the Gold Star of Hero of the
Russian Federation. It is said Peshkov was killed by ground fire as he parachuted. To honor
Peshkov Su-34 10 Red had his name applied.
