General Background
The MiG-29 is a twin-engine supersonic fourth generation air superiority jet fighter developed in
the Soviet Union in the 1970’s. The aircraft entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1983 and
still is in use with them as well as equipping over twenty four other countries over the years. The
NATO designation for the MiG-29 is Fulcrum and it was designed to counter the American F-16
and F-18. The MiG-29 was first seen in the West in 1986. The MiG-29 (9-13) is designated the
Fulcrum C.
The Aircraft
With the imminent arrival of the Eurofighter the German Air Force sold 22 of their 23 MiG-29s to
Poland for a symbolic price of €1 per item. The 23rd MiG-29 29+03 (cn 2960525110/3414) that
was originally delivered to the East German Air Force JG 3 as # 615 located at Preschen on
February 29, 1988 was withdrawn from service in July 2002 and sent to the Luftwaffenmuseum
located at the Berlin-Gatow Airfield. The aircraft wears the paint scheme from 2002 and has the
JG 73 emblem on the tail.
