General Background
The MiG-29 is a twin-engine supersonic fourth generation air superiority jet fighter developed in
the Soviet Union in the 1970’s. The aircraft entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1983 and
still is in use with them as well as equipping over twenty four other countries over the years. The
NATO designation for the MiG-29 is Fulcrum and it was designed to counter the American F-16
and F-18. The MiG-29 was first seen in the West in 1986. The MiG-29 (9-13) is designated the
Fulcrum C.
The Aircraft
In 1980 the Indian Air Force placed an order for 66 MiG-29s making them the first international
country to do so even though the MiG-29 was in its initial development stage. Between 1986 and
1987 42 MiG-29s with serials KB701 to KB742 arrived. The paint scheme on these first arrivals
didn’t have a standard IAF camouflage scheme, they wore Soviet colors and some of these
aircraft colors varied. MiG-29 KB715 belongs to the 47th Squadron “Black Archers” at Adampur
Air Force Station. Adampur is a base for 8th Wing (47th and 223rd Squadrons).
