Boeing AH-64DHA "Pegasus" ES 1009, Hellenic Army, Tatoi Airport, Greece, 2014
General Background
In the early 1970’s the US Army wanted a replacement for the AH-1 Cobra so companies submitted proposals. In July 1973 the list was shortened to Hughes and Bell with each building a prototype in 1975. The Army selected the Hughes helicopter because its landing gear was more stable and the main rotor was more damage tolerant. In 1981 3 pre-production AH-64As were given to the Army for testing and named Apache. The Apache went into production in 1982 and has evolved into one of the deadly machines over the battle field.
The Aircraft
In 2014 the third consecutive Athens Flying Week air show took place from September 25th – 28th between Faliro and Tatoi airport. Part of the participating aircraft involved the Greek Army Aviation Display Team “Pegasus”. The “Pegasus” Display Team is comprised of helicopters and crews from the 1st and 2nd Attack Helicopter Battalions from the Hellenic Army and given special markings for the occasion. This air show is considered the best in the south eastern part of Europe. AH-64DHA ES 1009 was manufactured as BuNo 92-0494 c/n PV884.
